These 2 sets of friends, living in different countries but used to reuniting for overseas trips, contacted our agency for an in depth tour of New Zealand, with special interest in nature, relaxation and gastronomy.
A very in depth guided tour, spanning 2 days, and inspired by our classic trip ‘Aotearoa’ with a few longer stops in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin. Also including an appreciated extension to Stewart Island, the third island of the country, which is known for its native birds, and a night in the Catlins region before returning to Dunedin, where our agency is based.

Mr A. & Mrs V., 2 long term friends originally from Switzerland, contacted our agency for a private tour in winter, with a train segment, and confirmed their trip after a few Skype conversations in order to construct their itinerary according to their wishes.

Guided tour in two parts, starting with a discovery of Auckland, the biggest city in the country, then a loop including Rotorua, the cultural centre, before beginning a magnificent train journey from Auckland to Wellington on the Northern Explorer. From the political capital, Wellington, the second part of the tour continued to the South Island. Traversing incredible scenery between oceans, mountains, lakes and glaciers, they traced their way down the West Coast before turning inland to Queenstown, known for its extreme sports and ski fields, then further across the island to Dunedin, with its Scottish heritage, before concluding their journey in Christchurch

FAQs

How many people can participate in a private guided tour?
From 1 to 15 people not including the driver/guide
What are the recommended types of transport?
We adapt the type of transport depending on the number of participants. All our vehicles are permitted, modern and comfortable.
How do the meals work?
It all depends on what’s included in your trip! If you’ve opted to include half board, you’ll have your breakfast (typically a full, American style breakfast) and most of your dinners are the hotel. Around midday you’ll stop at a café or a restaurant which serves a light lunch, which you’ll pay for yourself. It’s also possible to include all your meals or only breakfasts – we’ll adapt to your wishes!
What’s on the menu?
Portions are for the most part generous, with a choise of red meat, fish and vegetarian plates. Specialties are lamb grilled with herbs, venison, fish such as snapper, pies, fish and chips and kumara. For dessert you could have the celebrated pavlova, chocolate cake, fruit crumble, or other English style delicacies. There’s no bread on the table like in France, but you could always order garlic bread!
The country has gotten much better over the years in terms of culinary offerings., and notably has more cheeses now other than just gouda! Maori cuisine is also interesting with the traditional hangi, meat stew and sweet potato cooked in an oven dug into the earth itself. If you have any dietary preferences or allergies, please tell the agent organising your travel, or your guide on arrival.
Who will be our guide?
We work with several bilingual French/English guides, including Yoann Feillet, one of the directors of Antipodes Travel. All our guides have many years’ experience and know New Zealand well. They also know how to make you love the country, and how to help you discover all the different aspects of NZ! They won’t hesitate to improvise but will always keep within what’s pre-planned.
For example our clients have had the opportunity to visit a rural school on the West Coast of the South Island, to participate in a cricket match in Waihi, or have a classic barbecue at their guide’s home. Don’t hesitate to let your guide know about your interests or any particular wishes for your trip at the start of the tour, and they’ll do their best to see they’re included in the tour.
What happens if there’s bad weather?
If any excursions in the programme are cancelled by the operator because of bad weather, your guide will offer an alternative, or a refund of the activity itself.
In the case of major climate events which entail the modification of your itinerary, your guide will find an alternative and will do his best to stick to what’s already planned all while keeping you safe.
We cannot be held responsible for changes that are out of our control, and highly advise that you take out travel insurance prior to travel.
What measures have you taken to combat Covid-19?
Following the discovery of the Coronavirus at the beginning of 2020, measures were put into place in New Zealand to stop the spread of the virus. We are committed to adhering to hygiene and social distancing regulations (if applicable during your trip) in order to maintain the safety, health and comfort of our clients. Our suppliers and guides are aware and will hold to the norms in place at the time of travel.

The Antipodes Travel team hopes to welcome you to our beautiful country soon!
